Christmas 2022 Shirl bought me this awesome VW Bus Mailbox.
It took a few months to get it and then I was unsure of how to mount it. I kept trying to come up with a unique stand for it. I was trying to think of something VW related. Maybe made from old VW parts but nothing came to mind. I decided to just mount it on the current, very old, rather ugly 4 x 4 stand.
While walking the pier every week day morning for my daily exercise I always admired the newly refurbished cat walk that leads out to both light houses,
The city used some of the old cat walk towers to make some signs directing tourists to places around town. That is when I thought that maybe a miniature replica might make a great mail box stand, combining two of my interests - walking the pier and VDubs.
A couple of years ago we went together with the Balkema's next door and got a dumpster. Richard threw out 4 6 foot pieces of T shaped angle iron along with some metal shelves. I couldn't stand to see good scrap metal go in the land fill so I pulled it out knowing that some day I would either have a use for it or I would take it to the recycle center. It of course came to mind when I was looking at the cat walk as the perfect material to use for my replica! See, never through anything out!
I took a picture of a cat walk tower and used to calculate dimensions for my replica after measuring the height of the current stand at 42 inches.
This project got set aside since I was already working on the 73 Bug and the 71 Bus and yard work. After I had got most of the yard furniture packed away in a storage unit, firewood stacked on the back porch, flower pots cleared out and as many leaves cleaned up as had fallen, I had a little bit of time to start in on it.
